Formerly the famous hermitage of the Glagolitic
Order erected on a high, steep cliff,Blaca is one of the most beautiful
mountain resorts on Brač today. This had already been noted in many scientific
and travel descriptions. Blaca is a unique monument on our coast.A visit
here is not to be missed. Blaca is situated on the fringes of a valley,in
the southern part of the island.
The Glagolitic priests from Poljica fled to Brač in the 16th
century while running away from the Turks. In the 1551 they were given the
certificate of ownership of these areas by the duke of Brač.In 1552 they established
their monastic community and from that time onwards they cultivated the lands
presented to them"from the top to the bottom of the mountain and all
the land in the valley of Blaca.Gradually they enlarged their estates and
subsequently built up several small houses for their farm - hands and shepherds. In
1570 they were given permission to raise a monastery and a church which were
both to be completed in centuries to come.

The
present Sutivan is a settlement of Modern Times. It was founded in the 15th
century when the old Brač settlers from the interior descended to
the coast. But it was conceived in fairly ancient time.In the beautiful Sutivan
region Blato, some Roman graves have been
found.A very early Roman estate(villa rustica)
is connected to them.In 1934 the foundations of the early
Christian church of St.John(6th.century)were dug up.
The
parish church was raised in 1579,a
late period for Renaissance forms.Later on,in the centuries of baroque it was
partitioned many times so that the original style was completely lost. The 19th
century removed baroque mark of shrine.
Charming
and harmonious summer - house of poet Kavanjin
